The 28s
The 28s, the new punk rock band fronted by guitarist and my former 3 Cent Nickle band mate Clay Pigeons, made their public performing debut at the famous Studio 99. The venue is cool. Too bad the location sucks, basically a garage tucked away in the industrial area off Buck Owens Blvd. At any rate, I'm not here to review the venue.
This is the first time I've actually heard Clay's band play. They've been at practice for over a year, ever since the members of 3 Cent Nickle went their seperate ways. I didn't quite know what to expect. Well, I did have an idea. Clay used to sing the songs he wrote for the most part in the early years 3 Cent Nickle. I figured it would sound something like that. And I was mostly right. Clay's singing style is an up-front and raw punk rock style, kind of a combination of Ben Weasel and Johnny Rotten. It works well with the style of punk they play. I was overall impressed with the band. I knew and worked with drummer Doug, and I have to say he has very much improved in his skill. There was a new face in bassist Mike. You see, former 3 Cent Nickle bassist Heath Dobbler was originally helping out with the band, but he stepped out. Mike brings a new flavor in the mix as he is a bit more of a melodic bassist than Heath was.
Anyway, it kind of felt weird. Heath told me earlier this week that when they went to see my one-show band Flabbergasted play a while back they felt like they should have been up there with me, and that's how he expected to feel when we went to see Clay's band. He was right, because that's how I felt.
Anyway, check out The 28s at their MySpace page and go see them play next weekend at Vinny's Bar.
